Anesthesy - Exaltation of the Eclipse (1994)

1. Primal Exaltation
2. Beyond Sadness
3. The Defector
4. Guardian
5. Survival Of The Fittest
6. Intestinal Haemorrhage
7. The Change
8. The Ultimate Reincarnator
9. Enstrangled Minds
10. The Sun, The Red, The Blood
11. Eclipticus Finale Exclinatum

Origin - Belgium
Style - Thrash/Death Metal

" Anesthesy formed in 1988 near (Kortrijk, West Flanders) Belgium and were a pure thrash band at first.....They released a demo & a Ep before this first full length in 94"

" On the Ep Anesthesy started as a good mixture of death and thrash metal, calling to mind Protector and mid-period Messiah ....But on this Full-Length..We have a totally different animal.
Exaltation of the Eclipse" speeds up a bit, and adds more intense riffs ala Benediction and Bolt Thrower, as well as more technical ones, but preserves the doomy moments from the EP. Death metal has taken over, as evident from the heavy opener "Beyond Sadness", which nicely mixes fast furious riffs with ponderous doomy ones. Later on both styles alternate, seldom blended together in one track, as more room has been given to the slower dark riffage, although all hell breaks loose on blitzkrieg thrashers like "Enstrangled Minds". The singer now sounds even scarier and lower, a really brutal growler not far from Karl Willets "

This was a Quality,Obscure act that has gone unnoticed and really should have not been...If you can dig a strong mixture of Slayer,Bolt Thrower with shitloads of time changes etc......Then I highly recommend you check this long forgotten gem !

Judgement Day - Pathology Of Crowding - Demo (1994)

1. Pathology Of Crowding
2. Penitential Sermon
3. Clouds Of Mordor
4. Daily Rituals... Until
5. F.O.D. (Slaughter cover)

Origin - Netherlands
Style - Death/Thrash Metal

" 3rd demo from the crew from Gelderland,Holland "

" Underrated would be the word that describes Judgement Day....They just ever got the press that alot of other inferior acts got in the early to mid 90s.This demo brings more Death than thrash..But the thrash elements are still there..As in up-tempo beats and some blasting...But its the guitars that made this tape kill "

" "Clouds of Mordor"and the titletrack, are really like a kick in the face. Judgement day play at times at the speed of some newer Thrash metal bands, but still I would call them old style death metal. It's like if you take a few parts from Sadus, Kreator... and put in some really fast and angry Death Metal, then you get judgement day "

A band all you Death/Thrash fans should check out !......Great shit......

Ghost - The Lost of Mercy (1994)

1. Alien
2. King of Darkness
3. Bestial Rites
4. Cross of Stone
5. Extreme Reality
6. Flag of Shadow Master
7. Morbid Game
8. Anthem of Vengeance
9. The Day After
10. Fight for Your World

Origin - Poland
Style - Death Metal

" One of the earliest Polish death metal bands, and one of the few that doesn't owe its sound directly to Vader in one way or another. Ghost formed in 1988 and has managed to put out 3 demos and this..Their only Full-Length "

" What we have is a solid slab of European death metal that can most directly be compared to Iniquity's classic 'Serenadium', with thick, abrasive, and often sludgy riffs, and vocals reminiscent of Grave's Jörgen Sandstrom. More surprisingly, this album actually has stellar production - especially for something so obscure "

Yet another obscure Death Metal album you need to hear...But probably haven't...

" This is my favorite of their records..As it has the best overall feel and production..along with some cool riffs that are well thought out and composed "

At the Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease (1994)

1 - The Swarm
2 - Terminal Spirit Disease
3 - And the World Returned
4 - Forever Blind
5 - The Fevered Circle
6 - The Beautiful Wound
7 - All Life Ends (live)
8 - The Burning Darkness (live)
9 - Kingdom Gone (live)

Origin - Sweden
Style - Melodic Death Metal

" With their third album, 1994's highly accomplished Terminal Spirit Disease, Sweden's At the Gates raised their creative stakes beyond most everyone's original expectations, and with a better production..Started to fulfill the promise heard on earlier records "

" Right from the get-go, highlights like "The Swarm," "Forever Blind," and the title track venture into melodic territory like never before. Yet they never waver from the band's predetermined path of virulent aggression, and, best of all, keep it all short and sweet for maximum effect. And more… with extreme (or nonextreme, as it were) experiments like the all-acoustic and cello-laced "And the World Returned," At the Gates showed a willingness to diversify "

" Being the pre-cursor to 'Slaughter Of The Soul'....I always liked T.S.D. more......Minus the live tracks....This Ep(6 tracks) was and has always been my favorite At The Gates release.....

Abhoth - Divine Orphan - Demo (1994)

1. Condemned to Misery
2. Infinite Blessing
3. The Realm of Immortality
4. Dormant Reality

Origin - Sweden
Style - Death Metal

" Swedish band Abhoth formed back in 1988 under the name of Morbid Salvation Army. They introduced Doom-ish melodies into typical Death Metal and wre one of the first Death Metal bands in Sweden "

" After recording two demos, "The Matter of Splatter" in 1989 and "Forever to Be Vanished" in 1991, they released their first and only official release, "The Tide" (Corpsegrinder records, 1992). Numerous line-up changes occured and the band recorded two more demos (1994's "Dormant Reality"also known as 'Divine Orphan' and 1999's pre-album "Recovery From Life"). With only one original member left, Abhoth renamed to Chimera and entered the studio in 1999 to record their first record with the name, but unfortunately broke up during one of the sessions "

" Hetsheads a cult classic! Swedish death at its best! Features the vocalist that appears on the first Necrophobic album "

" 2 Demos/Promos from 1991 finally pressed onto CD format in 1994....In the vein of the early gods Entombed,Unleashed,Dismember etc.....heavy beat patterns and gutteral vocals, destructive structures banging the frustration of a suffocating world into the skulls of the unwise "

Suffer - Structures (1994)

1. Temporary Sane
2. Passionate Structures
3. Lies Within
4. Selected Genes
5. A Frenetic Mind
6. Maginary Homecoming
7. The Killing Culture
8. Freedom Of Speech

Origin - Sweden
Style - Death Metal

" A fusion of old-school death metal with the newer Swedish style, influenced as much by the thunderous Tampa blasters as anything from Europe, this band delivered solid but basic death metal that was reminiscent of Morgoth Vs Death"

" This rigid, boxy death metal takes its inspiration as much from rudimentary hardcore as from the first generation of death metal, but sustains itself through a continuity of rhythm which even in interruption provides, as the title suggests, a basic sense of structure permeating all of reality. Its riffcraft deals in simplicity but in links the riffs narrate an experience much as classical guitar moves through motifs. Its primary influence is "Spiritual Healing" era Death, in the choice of riff style and placement of vocal rhythm, and it echoes the choices of many early death metal bands in having hardcore-like primitive riffs over which inventive heavy metal lead guitar weaves a rhythm and harmony track "

This is a forgotten classic of Swedish death metal.....

" The music was not typical Swede death for the time but edges into tech death territory but the album is so great (and so woefully obscure) that I have to recommend it at every opportunity "

Edge of Sanity - Purgatory Afterglow (1994)

1. Twilight
2. Of Darksome Origin
3. Blood-Colored
4. Silent
5. Black Tears
6. Elegy
7. Velvet Dreams
8. Enter Chaos
9. The Sinner and the Sadness
10. Song of Sirens

Origin - Sweden

Style - Progressive Death Metal

" Unlike the Gothenburg scene dominated by bands like In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, Edge of Sanity led by Dan Swano was a band that stuck more to the roots of American death metal combining it with Swano's musical vision, which is putting as much emphasis on melody as possible. Furthermore his songwriting refuses to compromise stylistically as he was deeply influenced by 70's and 80's prog rock (speaking of which, his solo album Moontower is possibly his greatest work to date). Dan's indepedent-minded approach to creating original compositions along with cerebral lyrics suggest that Edge of Sanity was definitely a much better band compared to their contemporaries. It's a shame they went unnoticed by many death metal fans until their masterpiece Crimson which unfortunately was written when the band members were on bad terms with each other. This eventually would led to Dan's departure in 1997 and we wouldn't hear another EOS album featuring him on vocals for more than five years "

" Back to Purgatory Afterglow... I consider this one a perfect transition album from the band's older American death metal style to their more prog-driven motives. Musically this album shows a lot of potential growth and maturity in the way that it balances power, anger, lyrical depth, and musical complexity almost perfectly. Considering that Dan was only 21 when he wrote this album, this is a great piece of work. The sharp intelligence, clear vision, and genuine warmth in every song on this album proves that Purgatory Afterglow is a sadly overlooked offering from one of the most underrated (yet amazing) death metal bands ever "

Merciless - Unbound (1994)

1. Unbound
2. The Land I Used to Walk
3. Feebleminded
4. Back to North
5. Silent Truth
6. Lost Eternally
7. Nuclear Attack
8. Forbidden Pleasure

Origin - Sweden
Genre - Death/Thrash Metal

" Merciless were considered one of the first Death/Thrash bands signed in the early 90s and even had Peter Stjärnvind - Drums (Entombed)in its ranks"

" While most people remember Merciless as an old school death/thrash band in the vein of Sodom, Destruction and old Kreator they did release an album which sounded different than most of their releases.....This was "unbound" a bit of a move from Old-School thrash to more of a Death/Thrash direction "

" The title track opens with a cool acoustic intro before exploding into a fast thrash song. However, the melodic undertone of the guitar riffs definitely set Merciless apart from the typical old school thrash. The exquisite middle section of the song reminds of Dissection due to the use of semi-acoustic guitar riffs and melodic solos. Add to this the splendid production by Dan Swano and excellent artwork by Kristian Wahlin (aka Necrolord). Sure this album includes some pure thrash bombs in the likes of "The land I used to walk", "Feebleminded", "Silent truth" and the old demo classic "Nuclear attack". Yet songs like the epic "Back to north", "Lost eternity" and "Forbidden pleasure" contain the same melodic feel as the title track. Needless to say that the balance between the old school thrash tunes and the epic/melodic songs is perfect.Anyone remotely interested in Bathory, Dissection or old school thrash would do himself a favour by trying to find this classic album!
