Process of Guilt - Renounce (2006)

1. Motionless
2. Becoming Light
3. Fragments
4. Window
5. Falling
6. Crawl
7. Burden

Origin - Portugal
Genre - Doom/Death Metal

" A tremendous release from portugal !..... Powerful, bright, atmospheric debut work of melodic death/doom quartet Process Of Guilt "

" I would mention some elements that make Renounce what it is. Firstly, it’s melodies in brightness and infectivity similar to works of Swallow The Sun and Katatonia’s first releases. Then it is powerful growling and atmospheric low clear vocal. And, at last, a guitar layer: a vicious sound wall, ambient effect and doomy gloomy atmosphere "

This is truly impressive work that deserves significantly more attention than many underground endeavors are capable of achieving !

Enforsaken - Sinner's Intuition (2006)

1. Witness To The Fall
2. Blacklist Assassin
3. The Slain
4. Halo Of Ruin
5. Enemy Angel
6. Sever The Ties
7. Words In Red
8. The Course To Oblivion

Origin - USA
Genre - Melodic Death Metal

" 2nd and last full-length from this Chicago melo-deth crew "

" Enforsaken deploy actual riffs in their songs and hardly ever will the listener get a taste of that 'endless wall of distortion' sound in the background; nor is there the use of keyboards here. Enforsaken have a knack for delivering solos of the highest caliber. These boys know that a shredding solo is not just about how well it is written, but also how to build up to it, and more importantly, when to actually throw it in, and they nail it bang on every single time. And I believe this quality alone should have placed this band at a notable position. The vocals and melodies are more reminding of At The Gates or Dark Tranquillity so that as well is a definite plus "

A sadly overlooked band.....

Call it Nordic metal, call it black metal, the bottom line is that this is some ass kicking but sophisticated stuff. The recording, done at Studio Fredman (Opeth, Dark Tranquility), has resulted in a stellar audio production, as the guitars have the right amount of crunch, the keyboards jump right out of the mix, the rhythms crystal clear, and Galder's vocals menacing yet decipherable "

3. Cloned Insanity
4. The Third, the Magical
5. Bird of Ill Omen
6. Doubtful About It All
7. Tordah
8. Man with Mystery
9. Moon of My Nights

Origin - Finland
Genre - Melodic Death Metal

" Musically, Kalmah fuses guitar-keyboard-driven power metal with a growling voice for truly bombastic results. Comparisons to Dark Tranquility, Children of Bodom and Skyfire are unavoidable. The musicianship and song arrangements on Swampsong are top-notch, you won’t find one filler track here. As a matter of fact, you should expect nothing but very impressive guitar licks and catchy keyboard lines on every track! "

" So, if you've grown disenfranchised with those melodic death metal bands that have begun to emphasize melody over brutality, and long for the days when "melodic" was relatively unknown in the extreme metal world, then forget about Kalmah. This album will not satisfy your appetite for total destruction and chaos and will do absolutely nothing for you. Now, if on the other hand you are one of those subjects who simply likes the fact that “melodic” entered the world of “extreme metal”, then give Kalmah’s Swampsong a spin. You won’t be disappointed! Origin - Greece
Genre - Atmospheric Death Metal

" The band comes from Athens (Hellas), was formed in 2001 under the name Womb Of Maggots and by that name they released their first album “Life Odium”. After that they changed to INACTIVE MESSIAH and released a self titled full-length album. One more release followed by the title “Be My Drug” and “Sinful Nation” is their third release "

" Very technical and melodic at the same time, with deadly riffs, rolling drums and brutal vocals that kick ass, this black/death metal album was an unexpected surprise to my ears. Symphonic parts, choirs and ethnic elements add more mystery to this already haunted “Sinful” painting. Bonded compositions, professional arrangements and great musical skills are the materials that INACTIVE MESSIAH handled to make this album. A great production completes the last part of the puzzle!"

1. The Barren Skin
2. From These Wounds
3. The Architecture of Loss
4. Red Moon
5. Vagrant God
6. Pendulum
7. Saturn

Origin - Norway
Genre - Melodic Doom/Death Metal

" It says a lot when my first instinct writing a review is to just say "wow" and leave it at that. This is Funeral's 4th record and the record is a stunner. Not since Officium Triste's "Reason" had I heard such a record to produce emotion's so powerful!
All at once Sad and depressing but beautiful at the same time"

" This album is built on crushingly heavy and achingly beautiful riffs that are both heavy and melodic at once. The use of keyboards certainly adds another aura to Funeral’s music, an aura that could be called mystic or virtually shamanistic.
But it is the vocal's that put this one over the top...instead of Deathly vocal's....We get a barritone voice, clean and perfectly in tune with the music...very chant like ,soothing yet haunting! "

" With seven extensive, cautiously structured compositions , and almost an hour of supreme doom later...I am left with this:
One cannot conceivably sit through this album and not be moved ! Some albums just bleed with emotion.....

Origin - Greece
Genre - Atmospheric Death Metal

" Growth is an inevitable part of a band’s duration, but many of us want our favorite bands to recreate their best work, as if freezing a moment in time and merely duplicating it. Often times a band continues to change outside of our expectations, losing our interest in the process. Septic Flesh grew as a band,This saw the incorporation of melodic elements in a way that was genuine and valuable to what was going on in the melodic death metal world. However, it was only by their second album, Esoptron, that they could do no wrong. The creative genius of two individuals by the names of Spiros and Sotiris generated a doom/death concoction that was all at once beautiful, brilliant and brutal "

" Not only were they able to craft some of the catchiest melodic doom/death material around...But the atmosphere contained in each song is dark. Guttural death growls keep the mood and bring power to the tracks"

Septic Flesh manages to touch upon various moods and styles, almost making it difficult to categorize them.....I call it Classic !

11. Nowhere to Run

Origin - Sweden
Genre - Melodic Death Metal

" Without any doubt, 'Catch 22' happens to be the most criticized Hypocrisy album. It was originally released in 2002 as the eighth studio album of this Swedish death metal institution. Mastermind Peter Tägtgren himself thought that it needed an upgrade and decided – while the writing process of new material for the successor of 'Virus' has begun – to give the material a second chance. He recorded the complete vocals
and new guitars again and gave it a face lift in the mixing & re-mastering department......And I must say: This album is really Fucking great! "

" As a bonus, the japan-only Track "Nowhere To Run" is also included on this definite version. This record is ultra catchy and now much heavier.....It sticks in your head ! If you weren't a fan of "Catch 22" in the first place, check out this new version, as this will simply blow you away"

Genre - Death Metal

" New one from Mainman Rogga Johansson(Ribspreader,Paganizer)...now a complete band with Ed Warby - Drums(Hail Of Bullets,Gorefest),The Mighty Dan Swano - Guitars,Keys(Edge Of Sanity,Bloodbath)"

" This has made this album a huge improvement compared to the fine debut(breath of the demiurg) proved by the immensely tight sounding compositions. The guitar riffs, on one hand, display an almost banal form of brutality ('Wolves at the Gates'), whereas on the other hand, the atmosphere of a song is always respected ('Opus Morbidity', 'The Hate Chamber'). What the riffs seem to have in common throughout the entire record is their enormous simplicity; Demiurg shows that one doesn't have to play 385 notes per second to create an awesome death metal song. There is also a great mixture of brutal vokills throughout the Lp"

Origin - Austria
Genre - Melodic Death/Black Metal

" The debut release of IN SLUMBER is a mixture of Death Metal with some Black Metal elements. There are melodic and groovy parts in it too. These components create an atmospheric sound structure, which reminds of the Swedish Melodic Death Metal Style, but the tracks have a certain independent touch. Fantastic acoustic passages liven up the Songs (Heretic, Ardour and the title track), in order to go ahead with brutal hard riffing and double bass attacks. The songs sound spontaneous and honest "

" Vocally Wolfgang Rothbauer covers a wide range. From deep Death Metal Growls (Heretic, Down), Black Metal screaming (Orphaned Heaven, Sworn) to spoken or whispered passages (Ardour, Lunar Scars) you will hear everything on this album. The changing vocals follow the mood of the music perfectly "

In Mourning - Shrouded Divine (2008)

1. The Shrouded Divine
2. Amnesia
3. In The Failing Hour
4. By Others Considered
5. Grind Denial
6. The Art Of A Mourning Kind
7. The Black Lodge
8. Past October Skies

Origin - Sweden
Genre - Progressive Melodic Death Metal

" After five demos,Swedish new-comers In Mourning have released their debut album on aftermath music. And a sweet slice of scandanavian metal it is. In Mourning contains the same drummer - Christian Netzell of already reviewed Volturyon (search the site)A spectacular Death Metal release that is still in regular rotation on my car stereo. This record "shrouded divine" is a completely different animal all together....with the music generally following a pattern of dark, moody, death-influenced metal, interspersed with melancholy acoustic detours and instrumental sections, all infused with a general 'progressive' vibe"

" Some opethian influences do exist...especially in the vocal department as well as some Swallow The Sun melancholic passages.Thrown into the mix is some faster Dark Tranquillity type riffing and you have a quality, original release in front of you. In Mourning have managed to infuse all these influences without copying said bands...creating a release with melody, variety, cohesion and pacing all in the right place "

" So while this record may sound familiar in certain parts..the sum of it all : with strong musicianship and song writing makes for a Top Notch listen!

9. Sumerian Daemon
10. Mechanical Babylon
11. Infernal Sun
12. The Watchers
13. Shapeshifter

Origin - Greece
Genre - Atmospheric Death Metal

" Normally intros on metal albums are quite superficial, but Septic Flesh show that it is also possible to produce quite a bombastic one. The first real song Unbeliever is a logical suite to the intro. Bombastic monumental soundtrack-like tunes get combined with very brutal death metal riffs. This sounds very unusual, but also interesting. Especially the use of a mixed male and female choir gives nearly each song the certain touch that goes below the skin. It's great how Septic Flesh are able to combine brutality with melodies, and this all enriched with opera and symphonic parts"

" As Septic Flesh were already formed back in 1990, they may be called a Greek institution, but they are still able to play innovative metal after more than 13 years of band existence. The album also takes advantage of a huge sound. It was recorded in the Swedish Fredman Studio "

We all thought this would be their swansong...until reforming and releasing "Communion"in 2008 - another classic !

This must be heard by all fans of dark music !

4. A Presence Inexplicable
5. Dirty Priest
6. Spawn of Possession
7. Inner Conflict
8. Cabinet
9. The Forbidden
10. Church of Deviance
11. Uncle Damfee

Origin - Sweden
Genre - Technical Brutal Death Metal

" This is Spawn of Possession's debut album, and it's a very impressive piece of work. After a 48 second non-musical intro, these guys rip into 37 minutes of technical, brutal death metal. Their riffs have the tight, syncopative style of Deeds of Flesh with the sharp guitar tone and melodic flash of Necrophagist. Thus, they achieve a near-optimal mix of technicality, musicality, and brutality. They also use a variety of riff tempos and styles, without overusing any particular technique. The end result is that the music remains brutal yet doesn't get boring. The playing is excellent: they're exceptionally tight and handle even the most technical sections with ease. Still, the focus is on the songs, and none of the instruments steal the spotlight. There are a few guitar solos, but they're tasteful, appropriate and short "

" Lyric-wise, exorcism and spiritual/mental control seem to be the main subjects discussed, and considering how violent and haunting each of them can be, it fits the music perfectly. Nothing beats the singer talking about his soul being warped and mutated to the point where he cannot help but want to go on killing sprees, while the music describes every single moment of the man's change, corruption and deeds"
