Svart Crown - Witnessing The Fall (2010)

1. Where The Light Ends
2. Colosseum
3. Dogs Of God
4. Nahash The Temptator
5. Here Comes Your Salvation
6. Into A Demential Sea
7. An Eternal Descent
8. Strengh Higher Than Justice
9. Incestuous Breath
10. Of Sulphur And Fire

Origin - France
Style - Black/Death Metal

" Well now.....Didn't see this one coming !......Sophomore release from the french quartet Svart Crown..See's these lads step into the forefront with the big boys of the genre "

" This record combines a caustic, explosive meld of Blackened Death Metal that I have not heard in quite a while. This record is both relentless and pummeling yet with key riff changes and mighty breakdowns to keep it from getting boring. After a short intro we are introduced to a giant of a track 'Colosseum' with its outstanding riffs and evil ambiance...Next up 'Dogs Of God' again with brutal riffs and evil atmosphere..Here we see the first of a few crushing breakdowns that force you to take notice and feel that these four mean business "

" Track 4 'Nahash The Temptator' is another serious crusher with its catchy riffing and stomping breakdown...Building up and delivering a knock out blow after 4 minutes. I think after listening to this LP more than 10 times through it is primarily a Death Metal record but its the sinister Blackened leanings that set this apart from tons of other shit this year....Easily making my top 10 so far ! "

" There's just something about certain records that push the boundaries of brilliance and this is certainly one of them....From the mostly Death Vocals to the absolutely mean guitar work and the machine like drums....Forget all other Black/Death metal releases this year...You cannot fuck with this one !...Its that good "

It may be 27 degree's outside....But it feels like I'm on fire while listening to this !

Massacra - Enjoy the Violence (1991)

1. Enjoy the Violence
2. Ultimate Antichrist
3. Gods of Hate
4. Atrocious Crimes
5. Revealing Cruelty
6. Full of Hatred
7. Seas of Blood
8. Near Death Experience
9. Sublime Extermination
10. Agonizing World

Origin - France
Style - Death/Thrash Metal

" Massacra formed in 1986..And spewed out 3 demos and a full length..Before this their second album "

" France's Massacra were one of my favorite bands of the early '90s who were equal parts death and thrash metal. "Enjoy the Violence" was recorded in January of 1991, so while I can hear contemporary influences of that time of the likes of Entombed in the mix here, the sound of the old guard of speed/thrash metal from the late '80s (think the fastest work of bands like Kreator) is present as well. Not surprising, as Massacra had already been around for a number of years by this point. There are your typical death growls here and there, but overall the band present a very tasteful form of death/thrash that is very brutal but retains the class that is a trademark of European extreme metal "

" This is high quality music here....And has been reissued in 2005 with some bonus tracks....

Slayer,Kreator,Entombed fans...Give this a try if you have never heard these guys.....

Carcariass - E-xtinction (2009)

1. Chaos And Decay
2. In Cold Blood
3. Domination
4. Exulting Pain
5. Revenger
6. Threshold To Madness
7. Dying Today
8. E-xtinction
9. Chaos And Decay (Instrumental)
10. Domination (Instrumental)
11. Revenger (Instrumental)
12. Dying Today (Instrumental)

Origin - France
Style - Technical Death Metal

" This is Carcariass's 4th full length and 7 years since the last one"

" What we have here is a rather unique band...Not in the sense of...Unique as in they are doing something no one else is...But unique in the way they write and release their music. Instrumentals have always been a big part of their repertoire..And this album is no different. They even give you the tracks with vocals...Without vocals and have added more guitars to change it up a bit...That's definitely unique "

" Technical Death Metal is what they call themselves...I'm not so sure I wouldn't just call them Melodic Death Metal...As in most of the tracks are mid-paced,Very Melodic and easy on the ears. However..These guys can play their instruments...Guitar wise you wont find much better...Even the Bass player does tapping exercises.....But its the layers of guitars that are over-whelming...Sometimes tapping all the way behind the whole track...While crunching rhythms get your head nodding. Solo's..Yeah this album has them..And in spades....That's your technical shit here...Blistering fretwork all over the place "

" All in all however, from start to finish, this is a fantastic album that sadly, I'm sure, has gone overlooked by many prog-death, tech-death fans....But believe me this one is up there with the Obscura's of the world !

Trepalium - XIII (2009)

1. Daddy's Happy
2. Glowing Cloud
3. Blink of Time
4. Addicted to Oblivion
5. Inner Hell
6. Unexpectable Lies
7. And Now...
8. Usual Crap
9. Become
10. World Plague
11. Sadistik Peace
12. Fant-Easy Reality

Origin - France
Style - Technical Death Metal

" With the success of bands like Gojira...France has really taken hold of the Death Metal community.... giving notice that they have heavy and original bands to offer ! Trepalium is the next in line to show brutal, catchy, heavy Death Metal to the world "

" The technical abilities of Trepalium and their influences reach further than usual in death metal circles. Here and there a heavy groove is used and also we are regularly treated to ingenious jazzy guitar licks. This results in some great tunes, like ‘Inner Hell’ and ‘Usual Crap’, with the latest song not only sounding very funky but also reflecting progressive sounds. This stuff is infectious and heavy ! "

Trepalium is currently supporting Gojira on tour and this is more than justified given this strong and surprisingly varied technical death metal record. Highly Recommended !!

Supuration - The Cube (1993)

1. Prelude
2. The Elevation
3. Soul's Speculum
4. 138.JP.08
5. The Cube
6. Through the Transparent Partitions
7. Spherical Inner-Sides
8. The Accomplishment
9. 4TX.31B
10. The Dim Light

Origin - France
Style - Death/Doom Metal

" Supuration was founded in 1990 and in that same year they released their first demo. Three more singles/EP's followed before the band released their brilliant "The cube" album in 1993. "The cube" is as said death metal but actually this description isn't covering the band's unique sound very well. The songs are indeed based on death metal but Supuration had put a lot of work in coming up with brilliant and unique leadguitar playing and string-picking and because of this Supuration can be recognized out of thousands "

" Also the vocals are based upon death metal with their deep tone but Ludovic also has fantastic clean vocals besides a great deathly voice (one of the better growls in death metal) and this combination of both clean vocals and low growls still wasn't common in death metal in 1993. So in many ways the band was far ahead of their time already with this album. All ten songs on "The cube" are extremely great and never get boring at all and because of the unique playing these songs can't be compared to other bands at all. Unfortunately most people are not even aware of this great band so I really advice everyone to check this fantastic band out....."

Fans of Death/Doom metal check this out !.....They were ahead of their time in my book.....

Loudblast - Sublime Dementia (1993)

1. Presumption
2. Wisdom... (Farther On)
3. Turn the Scales
4. About Solitude
5. Subject to Spirit
6. Fire and Ice
7. In Perpetual Motion
8. Fancies
9. Sublime Dementia
10. My Last Journey

Origin - France
Style - Death Metal

" This is loudblast's 3rd release....And an underground classic it is ! "

" Sublime Dementia saw the band delve more into Death Metal than before and put out 9 tracks of heavy, hypnotic and atmospheric death metal.....I say 9 cause...one track has a female soprano singer that sounds sort of cheesy..But none the less this album is crushing ! "

" The aggressiveness of the album is not so much the speed, but the weight of the songs.... The riffs are dark and mid-tempo mostly . And then, we can not forget about drummer, Hervé Coquerel, who controls his drums to perfection and is remarkable in his precision. He does not abuse the double bass and is adept at putting fills where they are needed. The voice of Stéphane Buriez is no stranger either to the sense through which we listen to this album. It is deep and seems straight out of a place we would not visit. And when he decided to try a clear, monotone voice, as it is in the first Supuration album, it drives the point home a little more, creating a real uneasiness in listening "

Sublime Dementia is an album of sublime(Puns a plenty) French Death Metal and should really be discovered by all death metal fans of the Early 90s....

Yyrkoon - Dying Sun (2002)

1. Idols Are Burning
2. Crystal Light
3. Flight of the Titan
4. The Clans
5. Thrash 'em All
6. Gods Of Silver
7. Stolen Souls
8. Screamer
9. Back To The Cave
10. Dying Sun

Origin - France
Style - Death/Thrash Metal

" This band started out as a death-metal band directed towards the melodic scene, this band comes from France and was created in 1995. This band is called Yykoon, but this band is not like other extreme-metal bands, these guys has changed their sound from album to album and sometimes the changes has been pretty radical. The band mixes music styles like black, death and thrash-metal, and with these genres forged into one they have come a long way in their career. They also use dual vocal styles, one calm and melodic voice and a deep growling vocal style, this combination turns out to be very lethal with their melodic, heavy and catchy sound "

" Dying Sun is much more “metal” than the predecessor (Oniric Transition). The guitars improved dramatically, both in soloing and riff work. This time around, I feel everything I need is here and being executed with taste and accuracy. The lead work is excellent, being melodic, well structured and memorable. As for the riffs, the band finally started showing their ability to write some fresh stuff mixing up some the heaviness and melody"

" This album appears to have a platform of some sort of thrash and progressive-metal foundation, and on top of that there is a death and black-metal based construction. The album contains alot of melodic moments, heavy and catchy thrash-based formulas....Again..Alot of clean choruses ,but they are done well...and the growling is ok "

" This is their debut..And I can tell you, I for one Like it!....Intense rifforama and dual vocals in every track (Low gutteral,Higher scream)and a top-notch production make for a fine debut.....You have some damn catchy riffs in here.!

06. Revolution Riot Act
07. La Vie Cest Precieux
08. Disillutioned
09. Exterminator
10. Perfexionist
11. Wired
12. Victory (VOIVOD cover)

Origin - France
Style - Thrash Metal

" E-Force was the moniker used by Eric Forrest during his time in the mighty Voivod. Basically he appeared on Negatron, Phobos and Kronik albums as well as the self explanatory Voivod Lives between 1994 and 2001 "

" Modified Poison deserves to be heard, it’s a cracking album with 12 excellent cuts of thrashing cyber metal that bring to mind the excellent Negatron period of Voivod. I can tell you now that "Modified Poison" will prove that it's still possible to do original Thrash with a old school spirit...this band plays classic Thrash Metal but Eric Forest has a lot of musical different influences and in the end his music is original. So yes on a side the fast tempos and the really aggressive riffs are classic when it comes to talk about Thrash but here the guitar solo's are extremely impressive, the Black/Death Metal voice of Eric is not common in Thrash Metal and the general ambiance of the album is so dark that it's really disturbing "

" "Modified Poison" is a great album....If you thrash...Dont miss this one !

05. Allegiance
06. Collapsed Into Oblivion
07. Materia Prima (Instrumental)
08. Hysteria
09. Feelings Transgression
10. Deviance

Origin - France
Style - Progressive Thrash/Death Metal

" 2nd full length from France's Outcast...And If you like technical Thrash/Death Metal, Then you must check these guys out ! "

" Outcast brings a awesome mixture of Brutality,Technicality...Technical modern Thrash Metal mixed with Death Metal elements and above all really complex deep parts which come from the lands of Progressive music. To my ears fellow countrymen Gojira and Gorod are influences along with the Meshuggah type stops and starts "

" This is excellent really and the songs are so complex and go in a ton of different directions that it's really addictive...As an example, the great third track, "Reversal", starts with a slow riffs and a really dark and dirty melody which becomes fast a la Brutal Death and then turns into Jazz for some seconds before that it turns back again to Death Metal… It maybe looks chaotic but believe me this is so well-done that it's finally easy to understand the music of the band "

" So you're looking for technical but brutal music? You want Progressive Metal but don't want something that sounds like Dream Theater? Then Outcast has brought the goods ! Believe me.. This is a sleeper in a year of outstanding records !

Highly Recommended!

6. War In Heaven
7. Order of Chaos
8. Giant of Old
9. Transmutation
10. Desolation
11. Anger and Hate
12. Agressor (Hellhammer Cover)

Origin - France
Genre - Death/Thrash Metal

" This band from france has been around over 20 years.....and are the forefathers of the great death metal bands such as Yyrkoon,Gojira etc. "

" This marked the bands 20th year in the metal buisness and they did themselves proud with the release of "Deathreat". Kicking off with a pure thrashing death rhythm and riff the band shows that they are extremely aggressive and at the same time solid and tight as hell. And they also show that after 20 years of career they can sound modern and powerful. The music here is pure death/Thrash with fast as hell rhythms. Fast guitar solos are a trademark, showing good technical skills besides aggression. there is killer double guitar work that shows what these guys are capable of doing with their instruments. There are tempo changes and my favorite ones are the ones that go from ultra fast to slow and then go into a demolishing brutal riff. The rhythm section is really solid and that is another essential trademark of this band. This release is really crushing and should not be overlooked "

Gojira - From Mars To Sirius (2005)

7. Flying Whales
8. In The Wilderness
9. World To Come
10. From Mars
11. To Sirius
12. Global Warming
13. Escape (metallica Cover)

Origin - France
Genre - Death/Thrash/Groove Metal

" Some bands are so interesting that it can sometimes be hard to find words to describe them. After ten years in existence, GOJIRA have finally put themselves on the map of international appeal with one crusher of an album "

" I shit you not!.....This album personifies the word heavy !!...Im talking Ball-Crushing power. There are times during this record where in the middle of songs there are breakdowns or bridges..No..not metalcore nonsense..The heaviest of the heavy..where you cant sit still and must stomp around like Godzilla on a rampage through tokyo! "

" Lyrically, Gojira’s songs stand out from the traditional religion-bashing or gore-splattered death metal writing. Several of the songs take an environmentalist stand; one is actually entitled "Global Warming." There’s also a mystical oceanic cosmology alluded to throughout the album, as various lyrics mention great whales and dolphins in the sky. The cover art portrays an immense whale traveling through the universe. Gojira have definitely crafted a unique album with From Mars to Sirius. It’s thick and churning, yet peppered with several catchy riffs and grooves as well as unexpected grinds....In My opinion: I Think they are one of the most unique metal entities today."

If you have never heard this band.......do yourself a favor and check them out!
See them live....they are crushing !

Origin - France
Genre - Brutal Death Metal

" KRONOS deliver a fantastic brutal slab of Death Metal with enough hooks, variation, melody and all round excellence to grab hold of "

" One thing that immediately sets Kronos apart from the rest of its kind is the sheer amount of melody that is usually unheard of in brutal death metal. Yes, it is still very, "br00tal", but it never sacrifices musicianship nor technicality for the sake of being heavy "

This is a must-have for any fan of brutal stuff, the musicianship is great, not to mention the excellent production, long live

5. Catharian Ruins
6. Reverence
7. Fountain Of The Enchantress
8. Curse Of The Wizard
9. Stellar Winds
10. Finale
11. Gargoyles Rest

Origin - France
Genre - Melodic Black Metal

" Ruins is the third album of this really atypical combo and their best stuff so far.....Their bio says that Artefact is a Black Metal band, I think that I will have to give a better description to the music of the band if you really want to understand what Artefact is. Of course some rhythms and vocals are near of Black Metal but all in all, Ruins is definitely more like an Epic album of Progressive Folk / Death / Black Metal (a bit like with the last Primordial or also a bit like "Mabool" of Orphaned Land). The songs are all really long with great epic choruses and with a ton of different melodies break and complex guitars solo's"

" This album is an interesting and well-written effort that has the potential to appeal to a broad range of people on the strength of its boundary-spanning and yet classic-sounding style....Emperor to Dissection with some Symphonic elements and even some gregorian chants"

This will be one of the severely under-rated albums of 2008 !

9. Earth Pus
10. Neuronal Disorder State
11. Gorod (1999)
12. Submission Transfer (2005)

Origin - France
Genre - Technical Death Metal

" If you are a fan of technical riffage which still takes the time and care to caress those nerves that have not completely turned to the dark side with, not melodic, but catchy and discernible riffs that instigate the most enjoyable and frantic kind of headbanging, then you must give Gorod a try. To me they are one of the most original tech death bands"

"This album was originally put out as Gorgasm...but then re-issued under new name Gorod...This is the debut...Overall, you need this if you love technical death metal. It's not brutal, but it's excellent and memorable. Gorod, along with bands such as Gory Blister, Psycroptic, Martyr, Arsis, and much more, show us that technical death metal is not going to die off soon.

10. Maze of Oblivion

Origin - France
Genre - Brutal Death Metal

"French death metal commandos Kronos are up to their 3rd album..Recorded at Hertz studios(Decapitated,Trauma,Vader)
the production is beyond any doubts"

"First of all,I think the lyrical concept on all 3 albums dealing with ancient greek mythology is quite original compared to the genre's typical gore/carnage/massacre/slaughter lyrics"

"Now on to the music.....Musically, Kronos walk a similar path like their Polish peers with occasional leanings towards classic Cannibal Corpse. 'Bringers Of Disorder' is enough proof of that. Kronos are obviously skilled musicians as the riffs flow incessantly, often overlayed and circular in nature. With regular intervals, they re-instate guitar leads, the lead on 'Until the End Of Time' shows that they are no novices on their instruments at all. The drumming is varied with a good use of rolls, fills and whenever a track calls for it: blastbeats. The double bass drums are used the old school way: to accent heavy, darker or faster parts. This is definitely a nice change with today's bands who just blast double bass drums without any real sense of purpose or direction"
